Step I – Develop The Project Idea and Pitch It To The Executive Director
- Join your group and choose at least 3 or 4 topics for your PSA.
- Talk to the teacher and finalize your choice.
- Complete the worksheet entitled “Video Project Proposal – The Pitch”
- Write a Design Brief: Define the purpose and function of the video, and define and explain the five parts of the communication model. (at least 1 paragraph)
- Include your reasons for choosing this particular topic.
- Set up a meeting with the Executive Director (i.e., the teacher!) and pitch your idea.
Milestone #1: Obtain approval of the Project Proposal.
Step II – Schedule
- 1. Establish your timelines for the entire project. Some digital video project tasks happen at the same time. If deadlines are missed, then this will increase the number of hours on a project, which will increase a budget, and can cause final completion delay.
- 2. It is a good idea for every team member to use a blank calendar and establish agreed-upon due dates.
- 3. At this time, the Director and/or Producer should establish regular team meeting dates to review progress, to review the product, and to accommodate for changes based on team feedback.
- 4. When setting the initial schedule, be realistic – if possible provide time between critical dates to allow some “comfort zone.” Note: We only have two (2) digital video cameras and they must be shared equitably between all production teams. Cameras will be signed out for only 30 minutes at a time. Book your time early!
Milestone #2: Establish Schedule and Book Equipment.
Step III – Research
- Gather and document information on your chosen topic.
- As a group, create the story that you will be videotaping.
- Come up with at least three (3) ideas for a story that will demonstrate the magnitude of your issue.
- Develop your story idea by reworking the concept until the group is satisfied with the content.
- Create a “treatment” – a brief story outline in paragraph form and have it approved by the teacher.
- Write the script.
Milestone #3: Obtain approval of the Script.

Step IV – Storyboard

- View the Storyboarding PowerPoint Presentation in Moodle.
- Create a shooting script or storyboard that includes:
- The length of each shot
- Locations
- Camera angles and positions
- A description of the action in each shot
Milestone #4: Get your storyboard critiqued and approved by the teacher.
Production
The Production stage should be tightly integrated with post-production goals in mind to ensure a smooth workflow to the end of the project.
